Electronic scooters, also known as e-scooters, are modern electric-powered transportation vehicles that allow users to commute short to medium distances conveniently and efficiently. Today, ride-sharing scooter companies have deployed hundreds of thousands of e-scooters globally and serve over 100 million rides per year. Their continued growth and popularity has led to healthy competition among operators improving technology, service quality and addressing issues around regulations.

Safety and Regulatory Considerations

As wildly popular as shared scooter rides have become, increasing reports of accidents and sidewalk riding have become a cause for concern. Most e-scooter related injuries occur due to loss of balance, falls from the scooter or collisions with pedestrians or objects while riding. Scooter riders themselves are also at risk from reckless or distracted motorists on roads where e-scooters are allowed. While safety should be a shared responsibility among all street users, scooter companies continue to improve safety features like dynamic braking, automatic reduced speeds in pedestrian areas and mandatory helmet promotion. On the regulatory side, many cities are still working to establish clear usage policies, speed limits and designate preferred streets for scooter riding through local laws and permitted operation areas. Overall, a balanced approach that supports micromobility options while prioritizing safety of all street users is needed.

Looking ahead, the electric scooter industry is anticipated to grow into a multibillion-dollar global market in the next 5 years. More companies are entering the shared mobility space with innovative business models. Technologies are also advancing with improved battery capacity allowing longer range, suspension systems for smoother rides, advanced braking and safety features like automatic emergency braking. Electric scooters could play a bigger role in first and last-mile mobility through better integration with public transportation networks. There is also a shift towards incorporating electric scooter sharing into corporate campus operations and residential community transportation options.
